Front Engine Top Fuel Dragster Shine at 48th Winternationals

Thompson Clocks Quickest ET in History

Pomona, CA - Feb. 14-17, 2008: For the 48th time all eyes were focused on the historic acreage previously known as the LA County Fairgrounds - currently The Fairplex - for the event that officially kicks off the drag racing season, the NHRA Winternationals. Like Daytona for NASCAR, the "WInternats" tells the world that the winter break is over, a new year has dawned, and its time to go racing.

Surrounding the Winternationals there were a multitude of events within the event including an invitation only 2 run exhibition by four Nostalgia Top Fuel Dragsters. By virtue of his stunning 2007 NHRA California Hot Rod Reunion win, Brad Thompson was first on the list. The other cars were Brendan Murry with his "Running Wild Racing", Mike Fuller Motorsports with Mike McClennan driving and Rick White in the Neal & White car out of San Diego.

The show was one run on Saturday afternoon and one run Sunday between the semi-finals. It was then that Thompson stunned the crowd with the best time the class had ever seen - a sterling 5.632... the first ever sub 5.7 for a front engine dragster.

On Saturday Thompson was paired with Mike McClennan.

Thompson left first and never looked back to a nice 5.738 at 261.57. McClennan ran 6.215 at 231.04

One of the aspects of AAFD racing that fans at Pomona found "different" was access to the teams pit areas. Another thing they found remarkable was the more laid back attitude of the crews... they were actually have fun!

No restricted, by invitation only "Hospitality Area" in the Thompson pit - just a build your own sandwich table.

For the second exhibition Thompson was paired with Rick White.

From the hit this was a textbook pass.

To many of the fans at Pomona this day the scoreboard just said one car was quicker and faster than the other, but for fans of the class it was a jaw dropper. Brad Thompson had just run the lowest elapse time in NTF history - by a ton... a 5.632!

Thompson's incremental times: 60ft-1.003 sec., 330ft - 2.573, 660ft - 3.761/209.88mph, 1,000ft - 4.770
