Devos Family’s Charitable Contributions

Dick and Betsy Devos have faced criticism and received a lot of attention throughout the world. However, their charitable contributions have been unwavering, adding up to $139 million throughout their lifetimes. Recent events have seen their donations to Republican candidates and school choices being scrutinized. They have, however, launched millions into philanthropic giving through their foundation “Dick and Betsy Devos Family Foundation“. Reports suggested that in 2015 alone, the Devos family gave $11.6 million into charity work, doubling their total donations in the previous 5 years. The family has slowly become an integral part of dynasties that run republican politics for years.

The family, placed 24th on Forbes list, has shown value for education. Philanthropy has shown that education is a priority, awarding $357,000 to groups that support education forums. In a statement, Dick revealed that systems were hindering children from living the American dream. He has, therefore, worked to ensure efficiency by finding talented educators to help in reaching to every child. Beneficiaries of their efforts include: Compass College of Cinematic Arts in Grand Rapids, Ferris State University, Detroit Charter School among others. The couple itself is a benefactor of Grand Rapid Christian Schools and Potter’s House. The best thing about the family is that they donate without any conditions.

Dick Devos has continuously defended his foundation and has shown its credibility. John Truscott, the family spokesman, released a report that clearly reflected the Devos’ attempt to become more transparent about their donations. Dick himself said that his foundation’s giving met the criteria of charitable companies. This included the funding of the family founded charter school, advocacy group, located in Michigan. He also insisted that a majority of the giving is funneled at helping people directly, and not as suggested a political organization in any way. In any case, most of the groups that receive donations can confirm that they receive them without any strings attached.
